WKRN reports that the couple hit the cement divider at highway speed, the van’s front end wedged into the cement wall while the back tires spun rapidly, churning shredded rubber that caused the van to catch fire.

Multiple drivers who witnessed the crash pulled over and risked their own safety, running across four lanes of speeding traffic to help the couple.

One of the drivers, Amani Kelly, told WKRN: “I saw this vehicle on fire, around the tire area. A few men ran over and got the woman out of the vehicle. Then, we realized there was a man in the van as well.”

Kyle Tortorelli told WKRN that he dashed across the interstate, holding his hands up for oncoming cars to stop.

“It was scary. I was hoping traffic would stop. I saw wheels spinning. I ran across four lanes of traffic to turn the engine off. I got to the keys. It was blowing smoke. He was passed out cold inside,” said Tortorelli.

After a few minutes, multiple drivers were standing around the smoking vehicle. They worked as a unit to carry the driver away from the scene while a few others worked to put out the fire with fire extinguishers.

Kelly was proud of the other motorists’ rush to the couple’s aid: “It was not a second guess on my part or anyone else’s part. It was good to see everyone come together,” reported WKRN.

Dr. Chris Andershock, one of the citizens who happened to be at the crash, is also an emergency room physician. “Single car accidents are usually medical issues. He passed out. He has no recollection of the event,” said Andershock about the driver.

Andershock attended to the unconscious driver and then assisted in carrying him across the interstate, away from the van. Moments later, the driver was awake and alert, with no recollection of the crash.

“I’m glad everyone did stop so we could assist them and get them the care they need,” said Tortorelli.

As emergency responders arrived on the scene, WKRN reported a shift in the mood as the citizens shook hands and greet one another with smiles. The driver and his female passenger were seated on the back of a truck tailgate, appearing uninjured.

Kelly told WKRN that the scene really touched his heart. “The same thing happened to my grandparents years ago. So it really did touch my heart.”
