The clip, which was recorded at a Citibank in Englewood on Friday 27, shows the unidentified woman yelling at the employees and suggesting she will make them “famous.”
“I am going now to court to fight masks and you are not going to tell me what to do,” the woman said.
“Stand six feet away from me and do your social distancing. Give me your card with your name because this branch is going to hear your name. You’re going to become famous. Do it now!
“You work for me. I don’t not work for you,” the customer continues to yell.
“I’ve been a customer since 1990. Were you born then? Shame on you. Count your days. Count your days. Bully! This is giving you the right to be a bully? Because you’re brainwashed? I am a scientist. There is no corona.”
After claiming there is no coronavirus despite more than 13 million cases of COVID recorded in the U.S alone, the woman immediately shouts at the bank tellers in apparent fear that they could be infected.
“Don’t make me wear your mask. Are you trying to kill me? What happens if you have corona? Did you just suggest for me to wear your mask? Give me your name and number now. You’re done. You are done.”
The clip was tweeted out by Twitter user @FirenzeMike along with the caption: “We have a maskless Karen at a Citibank branch in Englewood, NJ telling the tellers that she’s a ‘Scientist and there’s no corona’ and she’s also ‘going to court to fight mask.’”
The video has since been seen more than 1.5 million times.
The name “Karen” has been adapted as an insult to describe usually white women who are found to behave in a number of ways, such as acting entitled, calling the police on Black people for no reason or yelling at workers.
There have been a number of similar “Karen” videos which have emerged as people refuse to follow COVID-19 health guidelines amid the pandemic.
New Jersey requires people to wear masks in indoor spaces that are accessible to members of the public, such a retail store and other business and public transport, with exceptions for those with health reasons and children under two.
Englewood Police has been contacted for comment.
