One of the key features that Unreal Engine 5 boasts is the underlying technology allowing modern machines to render scenes in real time at an insane level of detail, rivaling the production quality of movies and television shows. There’s a reason why many game developers choose to build their next title using Unreal Engine 5 such as the new Witcher game, and given the stance of Epic Games on allowing everyone to download the engine freely, it’s no wonder that someone attempted to propel Skyrim forward into the future.

Christian Gomm, a freelance environment artist familiar with the engine, posted a video on YouTube showcasing Riverwood, one of Skyrim’s most iconic locations, rendered in Unreal Engine 5. While the video isn’t rendered in real time given that it offers a 4K resolution (past the limits of Gomm’s hardware), it nonetheless provides a tantalizing glimpse into the wondrous capabilities of Unreal Engine 5, as well as showcasing the beauty of the original game in a new light.
This is hardly the first and only thing Gomm has rendered from the Elder Scrolls franchise, as he has previously used the gates of Kvatch from Oblivion to demonstrate just how breathtaking the graphics in Unreal Engine 5 can be. One thing is certain: there will never be a shortage of industrious fans remaking or recontextualizing their favorite games, as the trend of importing locations and rendering them in modern engines only seems to become increasingly more popular.
Gomm’s efforts no doubt introduce an intriguing question in the mind of every Skyrim fan – just how beautiful the next Elder Scrolls game might end up being. With Starfield delayed to 2023, it is reasonable to assume that the sixth installment set on the continent of Tamriel would get its projected release window pushed back as well. Considering the leap video game graphics have made in the past five years, one has to wonder what they may end up being five years from now.
